Why servicing is worth the money
An air conditioner does not fail suddenly as a rule. It degrades. The filter clogs a little more each month, the coils gather dust, refrigerant slowly drops below optimal, and the unit compensates by running longer and harder to reach the same temperature. You do not notice, because the room still gets cool. You notice on the electricity bill, and eventually you notice when the compressor gives up.
Servicing interrupts that. It is a small, predictable cost that displaces a large, unpredictable one.

The indoor unit passes room air across a cold, damp coil. Left uncleaned that is a comfortable home for mould, which is where the musty smell comes from when the unit starts up.

Manufacturers expect systems to be maintained. Neglect that leads to a failure is a common reason for a warranty claim to be turned down.
What a service actually covers
Servicing is not simply a filter rinse. A proper service works through the whole system, because most of what shortens a unit's life is invisible from the front panel.
- Filters and indoor unitFilters cleaned or replaced, the indoor coil and blower cleaned, and the housing checked. This is where most of the efficiency loss hides.
- DrainageThe condensate line cleared and the drip tray checked. Blocked drainage is the most common cause of water appearing on a wall or ceiling.
- Refrigerant and pressuresSystem pressures checked against spec. Low refrigerant means a leak somewhere, and finding it early is far cheaper than replacing a compressor that ran starved of gas.
- Electrical and controlsConnections, contactors and capacitors inspected, and the thermostat checked for accurate reading. Failing electrical parts usually give warning before they strand you.
- Outdoor unitThe condenser coil cleaned, the fan checked, and airflow around the unit confirmed clear. An outdoor unit boxed in by a shrub is quietly costing you money.
How often should it be done?
As a general guide, a home system benefits from a service once or twice a year. Commercial systems usually need more, because they run longer hours and move far more air through the same components.
Some things shorten that interval. Coastal air is harder on outdoor units than inland air, which matters here. Dusty environments load filters faster. A unit running most of the day is not comparable to one used a few evenings a week. Taking noticeably longer to cool the room than it used to. A musty smell on start-up. Weaker airflow. Higher electricity bills with no change in how you use it. Any water where water should not be. Any of those is worth a service before it becomes a repair.
